Low Carb Electrolyte Powders: How to Read the Label

Electrolyte powder labels can look alike at first glance, but the amounts inside vary a lot. Here is how to read the label on the electrolyte powders we stock at Love Low Carb.

1. Check the serve size

The numbers on a nutrition panel relate to one serve (a scoop, sachet or stick). Australian labels also show an amount per 100 g. Compare products per serve, and check how many serves are in the pack.

2. Sodium

Sodium is listed in milligrams. Salt (sodium chloride) is about 40% sodium, so 1000 mg of sodium is roughly 2.5 g of salt. The powders we stock range from under 100 mg to over 1000 mg of sodium per serve. If you have been told to limit sodium, check with a health professional before using a high-sodium product.

3. Potassium, magnesium and other minerals

Most powders also list potassium and magnesium, and some add calcium, chloride or phosphorus. The ingredient list shows the form used, for example potassium chloride or magnesium citrate. If you use more than one product that contains magnesium, add up the amounts and follow each label.

4. Carbohydrate and sugar

Check the carbohydrate and sugars lines. Sugar-free powders use sweeteners such as stevia leaf extract, monk fruit or thaumatin. Others contain dextrose or other sugars, which add carbohydrate.

5. The ingredient list

Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight. Look for caffeine, herbal extracts, allergens and any “may contain” statements.

6. Directions and warnings

Follow the directions for how much water to use and how many serves to have. Read any warnings, such as those for children, pregnancy or caffeine.

Browse our sugar-free electrolytes or the full electrolytes range. Each product page lists the minerals per serve, the ingredients and the directions.
