Hydration Basics: Water, Food and Electrolyte Powders

Most of the fluid people have each day comes from plain water, other drinks and food. Electrolyte powders are one more option: a measured amount of minerals such as sodium, potassium and magnesium that you mix into water. This guide covers what is in them and how to compare the products we stock at Love Low Carb.

Where your fluid comes from

Water, tea, coffee, milk and other drinks all count towards your daily fluid intake. Many foods also contain water, including fruit, vegetables, soups and yoghurt. The Australian Dietary Guidelines encourage drinking plenty of water.

What an electrolyte powder contains

An electrolyte powder is a blend of mineral salts, usually sodium chloride (salt), a potassium salt such as potassium chloride or citrate, and a magnesium salt such as magnesium citrate. Most also contain flavours, food acids and sweeteners, and some add calcium, vitamins or other ingredients. The amounts vary a lot: some of the powders we stock contain under 100 mg of sodium per serve, and others contain 1000 mg or more.

How to compare products

  • Sodium per serve. Check the milligrams of sodium on the label. If you have been told to limit sodium, choose a lower-sodium product or talk to a health professional first.
  • Potassium and magnesium. These are also listed in milligrams per serve. If you use more than one product that contains magnesium, add up the amounts and follow each label.
  • Sugar and sweeteners. Some powders contain sugars such as dextrose. Others are sugar free and use stevia, monk fruit or another sweetener.
  • Serve size and format. Compare tubs, single-serve sachets and sticks, liquid drops and capsules by the amount per serve and the number of serves in the pack.
  • Other ingredients. Some products add caffeine, vitamins or herbal extracts. Read the ingredient list and any warnings.

Using an electrolyte powder

Mix the stated amount into the stated volume of water, and follow the directions on the label. Don’t use more than the label directs.
